Professor of Pain Psychology: Tonny Elmose Andersen, PhD; University of Southern Denmark, Denmark
Dr Tonny Elmose Andersen is a Professor of Pain Psychology at the University of Southern Denmark. Dr Andersen is a psychologist of background and holds a PhD in health psychology. Dr Andersen has worked as a licensed clinical psychologist in the area for years before turning to research full-time. Dr Andersen’s main interests are within the field of whiplash associated disorders and posttraumatic pain and more broadly in prevention and rehabilitation of chronic musculoskeletal pain. His research illustrates extensive experience with a wide range of methods such as systematic reviews, epidemiological studies, experimental studies, validation of questionnaires and scales and intervention studies. Dr Andersen has conducted several randomized controlled trials and have experienced with single-case experimental designs. Also, Dr Andersen’s work extends to qualitative methods such as semi-structured interview methods with thematic analysis, and cognitive interviewing in validation of questionnaires.
His research falls into three main areas:
1.- Psychological risk and vulnerability factors for the development of chronic pain (posttraumatic pain and musculoskeletal pain conditions).
2.- Trauma and pain – assessment methods and pain mechanisms.
3.- Intervention studies related to prevention and treatment of chronic musculoskeletal pain and comorbid psychological distress.
Professor of Musculoskeletal Health: Jan Hartvigsen, PhD; University of Southern Denmark, Denmark
Professor Jan Hartvigsen is an internationally leading researcher and research leader in musculoskeletal health. His focus is on improving care for people with musculoskeletal pain and disability and he takes pride in breaking down barriers between disciplines and bringing together people from diverse backgrounds in productive collaborations.
Jan has published over 300 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, his research has been cited more than 25,000 times. He has been a member of many national and international expert committees. He was member of the WHO Guideline Development Group for Primary Chronic Low Back Pain published in 2023. He was deputy-chair of the landmark Lancet Low Back Pain Series that was published in The Lancet in 2018. He has supervised 22 PhD students as main- or co-supervisor to completion.
In 2020, Jan Hartvigsen was appointed Knight of the Order of Dannebrog by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II for meritorious service to Denmark through science.
Professor of Occupation & Health: Nathan Hutting, PhD; HAN University of Applied Sciences, Netherlands
Dr. Nathan Hutting is currently working in the Netherlands as an associate professor at HAN University of Applied Sciences in the Occupation & Health research group. He also works as a physiotherapist in private practice. Nathan is the Vice-President of the International Federation of Manual and Musculoskeletal Physical Therapists (IFOMPT). He is also a board member of the VvAA, the largest association of healthcare professionals in the Netherlands with over 130,000 members, the Physiotherapy Research Society (United Kingdom) and the Pain, Mind and Movement Special Interest Group of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP). Nathan is a commissioner of the Lancet Global Health commission on people-centered care for universal health coverage.
His current research topics include chronic conditions, musculoskeletal conditions, self-management, patient-centered care, occupational health, work-focused healthcare and vascular conditions. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles. Many of these articles have significantly influenced musculoskeletal (physiotherapy) practice. Nathan has delivered numerous international keynote speeches and congress presentations, and lectured in Africa, Europe, Asia, North America and Oceania/Australia.
Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Pain Management: Dr Joanne O’Brien Kelly, PhD, MSc, BSc, RANP, RNP, RGN, FFNMRCSI; University Of Medicine and Health Sciences, RCSI, Dublin.
Dr O’Brien Kelly is a Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Pain Management and nurse prescriber with over 20 years clinical experience in the management of acute and chronic pain. She is a past president of the Irish Pain Society and past Irish Councillor to the European Pain Federation, EFIC. In 2023, Dr O’Brien Kelly was the first nurse to be elected to the board of the European Pain Federation which represents over 20,000 multi-disciplinary health care professionals working in the field of pain from over 38 countries. She is Vice Chair of the EFIC Advocacy Committee.
Dr O’Brien Kelly has a particular interest in the management of neuropathic pain and in chronic widespread pain and Fibromyalgia. In 2018 she was awarded an Irish Research Council Employment Based Post Graduate Scholarship to develop an eHealth resource for people living with Fibromyalgia called FibromyalgiaMatters.ie. She is a Fellow of the Faculty of Nursing and Honorary Clinical Lecturer in the University Of Medicine and Health Sciences, RCSI, Dublin.
Professor of Exercise and Human Health: Søren T. Skou, PT, MSc, PhD; University of Southern Denmark, Denmark.
Søren T. Skou (PT, MSc, PhD) is a Professor of Exercise and Human Health at the University of Southern Denmark. He leads the multiprofessional Research and Implementation Unit PROgrez in Region Zealand, Denmark. Prof. Skou is internationally recognized for his work in osteoarthritis and multimorbidity. He has authored over 350 publications (including 250 original peer-reviewed publications) and secured significant research funding, including an ERC Starting Grant. His research focuses on advancing clinical care for people with chronic conditions through evidence-based treatments developed, evaluated and implemented in a close, interprofessional collaboration between patients, clinicians and other stakeholders.
